Return of the Prodigal Son?

Our Snouty's been busy around Goodison lately.

He told the media that Wayne Rooney wanted to play in Hibbo's testimonial but it was vetoed by Whisky Nose.

Hibbo was reported as saying Wayne wanted to return to the Old Lady one day.

Snouty says the Crocky Cracker long ago forgot his spat with Moyesy and they've made it up, so everything's hunky-dory between them now.

What if Wayne decided he'd made enough money and just let his contract run down so he could return to us for nothing except his wages?

When you think about it he's never had an outstanding match against us.

Would you welcome him back?

Who cares what the fat little get's won since he left? He joined a club and a city we all despise. When he did that he cut himself off from us forever. He can rot in hell as far as I'm concerned.

Would love to see him back, since leavin he's won loads of leagues, cups, champions league, player of the year awards and shed loads of money, so maybe he should have Stayed here and got an Fa cup runners up medal and a semi final of the league cup. It's a no brainer isn't it get real blues there the reasons he left

I could never understand him leaving. Yes I understand it was for money and a better chance to win trophies but he is an Evertonian(?) Maybe I'm old school but if I was blessed with his ability to kick a ball around there is only one place I would want to play - Everton. Yes there are people who say it is just a job and that it's a short career but we're talking about an Evertonian choosing another club over Everton. I would have wanted to win trophies with my club, not another club. If he came back it would be because he's arrogant enough to think he can. I'd tell him to go and kiss a badge somewhere else. Once a blue always a blue.

A couple of points I would like to make. First, whether Big Dunc wanted to go or not, he put pen to paper, nobody else. Do you really think someone like him would be bullied into anything? We all knew what happened at the time. Johnson needed the money, the club needed the money, but at the end of the day, he signed it. The day Rooney left I was watching him with kids on news outside Old Trafford and started crying, not because Rooney left, but because of what it and he stood for. At the time we had just suffered possibly the worst 10 years this club has ever seen and Rooney was a beacon of hope. At that moment the beacon went out and all hope of us ever getting back to the top went with it IMO. The only way I would want him back would be if he was still a top player. Why have him back if he was passed it? Rubbing salt into the wounds would be an understatement. Also just to add, if i had 2million evertonians calling me whatever or trying to kill me, I would still never, ever kiss another club's badge. What he did that day was unforgivable. The lad is a worm, pure and simple. But to this day I still think and have many many arguments about it, that on his day nobody is better. When he is on form, like that Arsenal match last year, he is simply a joy to watch.......He was made the player he is today by the people at Everton, and for that we should be proud. ( Any doubt just remember Euro 2004).

Malcolm, Orkney I completely agree! If Wayne Rooney loved playing for Everton, then why did he leave? It's something called money of which he wanted more and chose that over club loyalty! I would not want him back and if Jelavic can score as well this season, like he did towards the end of last season and score 20 goals for us and if Naismith has a good season and scores fairly well for us also, then no way will we need Rooney!

Paul comment 49, the deal was done and signed that afernoon before we played them, he went on 40k a week, we were told this in the winslow pub an hour before kick off...my mate was physio there at te time and confirmed it...he never cried in the dressing room, he signed and although I don't think he wanted to go, he never fought to stay either....12k a week rise he got, so money was involved cos lets face it, who would go there..I'm not saying he doesn't love the club, just there seems to be different views for different players....

No. My annual 1100 mile pilgrimage would be canceled for the duration of any return. Football is all about loyalty. Full stop.

Not only would I have Rooney back right away- I still watch how he plays with great interest. Other clubs have great players- hopefully we'll sign a few- but the flip side is that we will get offers that are too good to turn down along the way. Losing a player to Arsenal a few years ago broke my heart- but that was Alan Ball and I was still a young lad. I grew up and learned a lesson about the nature of the game. Sentimentality is not a meaningful part of professional sport.

H comment 35, the rumours I heard (yes only rumours but personally I believe them) is that the deal was done in the stand while Duncan was on the pitch. Then after the game he got told in the dressing room and broke down into tears saying he didn't want to go. He didn't walk out for money and the only reason he agreed to leave is he was told the club needed the money. He didn't go chasing money. When a player leaves for money they usually request or push for a transfer, Duncan tried to oppose it. If you think Duncan leaving was worse than Rooney leaving you need to pull your head back. If Duncan wanted to shit on the club he could have done it any time and gone to much better clubs than Newcastle. But he didn't, and the first chance he had to come back, he did. Duncan loves our club as much as the rest of us and he has proven it time and time again (the tatoo is just one example.)
Paul H, Walton, 12:44 PM 10/08/2012

48
Everybody knew he was going to leave. As others have pointed out, it is his behaviour towards our club afterwards that is the issue. He was once a Blue now he's a Red. I wouldn't want him back now or when he's past it. He's burned his bridges. Please stay at Manure Wayne, you're not welcome back here as far as I'm concerned and you never will be. A bell end of the first magnitude.

Given the lurid publicity, that reference to Wayne and 'the Old Lady' is a bit unfortunate don't you think? I would have thought that is the last thing even Rooney was contemplating :o)

When he went I was devastated, but I think he would be welcome back now. The crowd don't boo him as much and he doesn't celebrate against us when he scores. He will be back.
Cal, Rhyl, N Wales, 10:54 AM 10/08/2012

45
Whether the crowd was getting to him or not you just don't do that sort of thing. He's kissed the badge on many occasions, even when he hasn't been playing Us. He's just trying to get round the club to get an ovation and not abuse when he comes back. Well he'll be getting it off me, Fat Little Knobhead.

When Rooney first appeared in the team we all knew Moyes and BK had two years to build a team such a talent would want to play with. They didn't/couldn't. And so we all sadly understood why he went. The real question here is not the return of the Roonster, but can exactly the same thing NOT happen to Ross Barkeley and, injuries apart, JR?
Blue nez, France, 8:36 AM 10/08/2012

43
So people would not have one of the best players in the world back if he did decide to come back? Yes he left when he was 18 years old but it's not as if we've gone into turmoil because he left. We finished 4th the very season he left. For people to say we dont want him back is just ridiculous.
Nogz, Work, 8:33 AM 10/08/2012

Just imagine if we can attract a mega rich investor. Surely bringing Rooney back in whatever fashion would bring with it an instant return and international profile. The ability to sign Rooney should be used as a sales pitch to any mega rich investor.

Were we all not young once? Some of us still are. And have we not done things we regret? Look at the reasons why he may have left, which have been more than covered in the replies to this article. Why is his boy's bedroom covered in the Blue of Everton? Why was Alex Ferguson not impressed when he found out? As someone once said, you can take the boy out of Everton but you cannot take Everton out of the boy. I would welcome him back. Kissing the badge? Not a problem. Things that were probably shouted at him from the terraces that day would have goaded him into doing that. He is maturing now, give him his due he is trying to be a role model to his kid.

What's the point in saying "once a blue, always a blue" if we turn our backs on essentially some young kid (infamous for his bad temper) reacting in the heat of the moment. These aren't just sayings, they matter.

Come on eh, when I was 18 I murdered my parents and grassed all my mates up and got them jailed. Then I burnt down the local pub and the church I was christened in. We all make mistakes and act disloyal when we are that age. . . but I never stopped loving Everton FC.

In response to 35 (H Walton) - before you start talking about Duncan Ferguson walking out on us get your facts right. Duncan didn't do anything. It was all done behind his back. Quite frankly I don't care if Rooney comes back or if he doesn't... but don't start slagging off Duncan. You're talking rubbish.
Freddie, Huyton, 12:02 AM 10/08/2012

No way! If you're a Blue you don't kiss another team's badge. Doesn't matter what club it is, doesn't matter how old he was at the time.

He left to further his career, ok,it was a season too early for my liking, but we needed the money. Since then he has won everything, still some say he was a traitor...turn the clock back a few years earlier...Big Dunc walked out on us for more money, but to a shite club, then won nothing. And when it never worked out for him he decided he wanted to come back...and before you say he had to leave Johnson wanted to get rid, he was under contract at the club and he was captain of the club. He could have just said NO....but the same fellas who slag off Rooney idolise Ferguson and what he done was worse...think about it.
H, Walton, 10:32 PM 9/08/2012

After all is said and done the lad is a true blue and a great footballer. Imagine the damage he would inflict playing for us. Now he is a mature player he would be 100% every match. And don't forget, as the great man said, every Evertonian is worth at least 20 redshite.

Let's talk purely footballing terms for a moment. How would Rooney suit playing in our system? You see how he plays for England, like an absolute load of dog shite. We play very much a similar style to England, very rigid and with little fluidity or guile. The pace of the play is often slow and the midfield often packed (which wouldn't suit Rooney as he likes to drop deep). Rooney has to be playing in a top team with players who are on his wavelength to even look like a good player, which is proven by his performances in an England shirt. Having said that, who's to say we won't kick on and become a more adventurous footballing side in a few years time if and when he does decide to come back?
Mike, Widnes, 8:06 PM 9/08/2012

Wayne Rooney left Everton for three reasons. 1. He wanted to further his career. 2. Cos he fell out with Moyesie. 3. To make sure some quality money came into his beloved club. He will come back at some stage in his career, but when is the question ?. You are welcome back any time son and the sooner it happens the better. Thought Naismith looked like he could find the net a couple of times this season and I enjoyed the way Peanut kept finding him in the final third. I really hope that Naismith and Jelly can recapture the understanding that they had at Rangers and we may start the season a bit better. COYB.

We couldnt afford his wages now even if he did run down his contract with the mancs. Please dont take him back when hes a has been in a couple of seasons. Think Gazza and Ginola. Dont give him the pleasure of playing for Everton again.

Rooney saved our club by leaving. We would never have got the likes of Cahill, Arteta, andy Johnson and more if it wasnt for the sale of Rooney. Rooney coming back would definitely improve our team and help us push on to bigger and better things.
Jonsey, Bootle, 7:29 PM 9/08/2012

I hated him at the time when he kissed the manc badge and celebrated scoring against us, but the lad is a blue and wants his son to be a blue. No one can say what they would have done in his shoes. I'd like to see him back because he is a great player and will be remembered was a great player who was from the blue side of this great city.

It's all academic. There's no way he'll ever be back at Everton.

Question: If Rooney hadn't left us for £26m plus back in 2006 does anyone think we might have been the first Premiership Club to go into liquidation?

Some of the commentsIi read on this site annoy me. I would have Rooney back tomorrow. After all our motto is "Nil Satis Nisi Optimum" Nothing satisfies but the best, and in order to be the best you have to have class players and Rooney is definitely one of the best. Also remember he is bringing his son up as an Evertonian. COYB.

Nah. He burnt too many bridges with too much disdain. Can't forget the way he and his agent treated us like dirt. Callow youth argument doesn't wash. So agree with others he's too untrustworthy and unscrupulous to play the prodigal son when it suits him.

Take a look in the mirror all of you who despise Wayne. What would you have done in his situation? The kissing of the badge incident.....the crowd were baying for his blood from the first seconds....'''Fat little knobhead''' I seem to remember was the main chant. I don't know how I would have reacted but even at the time I knew it was a heat of the moment thing. Wasn't it the same season he stated he hates the shite with a passion... Saw him at the Blackpool cup game with an EFC t-shirt on. Would welcome him home with open arms.

I really find it hard to understand what drives people sometimes in this world. Talking about Rooney returning when he showed no loyalty, no integrity or class and it's acceptable because it was for a large some of money. Why is that acceptable? Every time I see or think of him kissing that badge it makes me sick to the pit of my stomach.

Couldn't give a shit what he does. Once he kissed the manc badge that was terra as far as I'm concerned. If he loved Everton so much all he had to do when the mancs came sniffing was say No. It doesn't matter whether he's sixteen or sixty. Everyone said the media would turn on him and they did, that's what he gets. No sympathy for him whatsoever.

Spot on Dave, Southport (Comment Number 1). Once you've spat in the face of OUR Beloved Club you are no longer a part of it. He's more than disrespected Us and he's gone too far, He can't just expect just to walk back in whenever he sees fit. Make a stand Blues! We're better off without him. He NEVER was or EVER will be an Evertonian. If he comes back one day, that is the day I will be well and truly be disillusioned by football.
Jay, Walton, 2:17 PM 9/08/2012

He only signed for the Mancs to make sure our lovely neighbours don't win the league. But it looks like they are doing a good job of it by themselves. Ha.

Rooney left us in the sh!te without a second thought. We finished the season in 17th place, having just been battered away at City. And he walked out on us to a club who's fans continually sing about how much they hate scousers. What if Moyes and the team stayed as bad the next season and, denied of Rooney's ability, we went down? Would we still be as quick to forgive the unforgivable? He didn't give his "beloved" Everton a second thought.
Dave, Southport, 2:09 PM 9/08/2012

We should remember he was only a kid when he left and from all accounts he obviously hated David Moyes at the time. Kids are like that. The money that was flying around seems to have turned family heads and that's understandable if you're in difficult circumstances. I doubt if any of us would have acted any different. The transfer money probably helped save the club financially, so that was a good thing too. If we had to choose between any player and the existence of the club then the player has to go no matter how much we might like him. There isn't a club anywhere in the league who would have acted different faced with the same choice. His actions afterwards were stupid especially when he got his private life into the papers. Kissing the Manc badge is what did him in with a lot of Evertonians - I bet he regrets doing it now. I don't think there's a cat in hell's chance of him coming back because we can't afford his wages, end of story. Also who wants somebody past his best and out for a sentimental return? He's a great player but I think his time with us came and went, it's just the way it worked out. I still wish him good luck but I don't want him back if he thinks he's doing us a favour, that could be poison in the dressing room.
Spectator, Crosby, 2:09 PM 9/08/2012

Broke my heart, but he was young and his advisors filled his head with all sorts. He has never hid his support of everton and would love him back before he gets past his best. Once a blue wayne ?
Stanno, Widnes, 1:51 PM 9/08/2012

Don't blame him for leaving, but there was a way to go about it. He did it the wrong way. Completely forgot about the fans and the club, and has realised the error of his ways. Now he's disliked around the city, and at first this probably didn't bother him cos he earns millions, but over time its started to get at him so he's trying to rebuild his bridges. The only reason he got so much grief from us was cos he was such a bell end. He kisses the Manc badge before he goes to bed. He's a wonderful player, but I'd rather support true blues like Hibbert, Jags and Baines (even if he goes, he'll show a lot more class than Rooney)
John, Walton, 1:46 PM 9/08/2012

This just shows how fickle Evertonians can be sometimes. He is obviously world class and left Everton to win trophies.... but he shat on us from a great height with how he handled everything and then kissing the Manc badge in front of the people who helped make him the player he is. He should never be forgiven for that or trusted. He then tried doing the same thing to United and bottled it late on. When whisky nose has had enough of his knobheadness, he will try and flog him... Let him rot in the rezzies or sign for the shite because he doesn't fit into Everton's way of doing things anymore and will only rock the boat at Goodison.

Davey from H8Vill comment #1, As much as I feel your pain, the real question here is do we love Everton more than we despise him? Despite his discrepancies (lack of loyalty, Rant Fests and being a prize Knob) he's still a class player and would make great cover for Jelly or Naisy! My only concern would be with his frame of mind and how he would affect the rest of the club!
Doug, Liverpool, 1:11 PM 9/08/2012

The season after he left we had a forward line boasting for the most part Marcus Bent, supported by Tim Cahill and - injuries and suspensions permitting - Duncan Ferguson. We qualified for the Champions league. Good player that he is, he was never the lynchpin of the team when here was with us, and we arguably played better after he left. Sure if he "wants" to come back in a few years, why not? But it would be mistake of monumental proportions to screw the wage structure for a player past his prime, and then try to build a team round him.

Don't agree with Dave from Southport. If it would have been his 16 year old son he would have have advised him to do what Wayne did. The lad's a class player and any blue would take him back tomorrow if we could.

I'd love to see Rooney playing for us again. All should be forgivien, if he wants to come back he should be welcomed back with open arms. He justified leaving with eveything he has won, and we've built the team we have today on the money we received from him. He's much better, and we're much better for him moving. Now is the right time for him to play for Everton. With him in our team we'd be competing with the best every season.
Mikeyboy, The Office, 1:00 PM 9/08/2012

I don't hold his moving against him. He was a kid and his dad and advisers were pushing for the money, so OK. His sale was the impetus for us to buy a few quality players and if he'd stayed in a struggling side who's to say he'd have been half the player he is now, or if we'd still be a top 6 side most years? What would hack me off is that despite being "once a blue, always a blue" he kissed manures badge. I guess though that the man's a toffee and so is his kid, so yes I'd be happy to see him come back for his swansong.

Read this yesterday there was a link to The Guardian story in the BBC gossip column - apparently Rooney asked Hibbo if he could play for the blues again in his testimonial, Hibbo wanted him to play the only thing that stopped him was utd playing a friendly with Barcelona. I personally think Rooney will play for us again and don't see any reason why he can't come back. COYB's

Undoubtably, he was a young lad who was ill-advised. At the time he was a national treasure after his exploits for England, that never played for the blues again. I think that is what annoys most blues.

Can only see him returning if its when he is much older and coming to the end of his career. Forget how much money he has earned the lad also wants to win trophies, compete at the top end of the premier league and be playing in the champions league every year. Unless Everton can establish ourselves as a top 2/3 side he wont be coming back until he's at least into his 30's.

DEFFO HAVE HIM BACK-ALL IS FORGIVEN AND FORGOTTEN AS FAR AS I AM CONCERNED-THE MAN IS A CLASS PLAYER

I despise him and always will. His first season (at 16) with us he was great; in his second season he already thought he was too good for his "beloved" Everton - England's Rooney and Everton's Rooney were different players. Then he leaves us at the bottom of the remaining teams in the league, at the end of the transfer window, thereby not only depriving us of his services but also depriving us of the opportunity to get players in to replace him. And he does this to join a club who's fans rejoice in their hatred of scousers: whilst Rooney kisses their badge. If he had of played in Hibbo's testimonial I'da walked out.
