On this day in 1969, a crowd of 53,253 saw Everton defeat Leeds United 3-2 at Goodison Park. Everton were top of the league after 6 games, but dirty Leeds were league champions and were on an unbeaten run of 34 league games.
Everton's John Morrissey had a great game and Everton went ahead when Jimmy Husband hit a shot past Sprake in the Leeds goal. Everton went 2-0 up when a Morrissey cross was headed against the crossbar by 21 year old Joe Royle, who was giving England centre half, Jack Charlton a torrid time. Royle was first to react and headed the rebound in.
In total control, Everton went 3-0 ahead just after half time, when Royle struck from 20 yards. Leeds came back thanks to goals from Bremner and Clarke, but the 2 points were Everton's in a memorable 3-2 win. Everton went on to be Champions.
