Everton Now Clear Favourites To Sign Jelavic
Bookmark and Share

Everton are now clear favourites to sign Nikica Jelavic from Rangers.

West Ham have pulled out of the race to sign the 26 year old striker. Manager, Sam Allardyce said: "The price was too expensive."

Maybe it was, but our sources say that Nik didn't want to go to the Championship and he definitely wants to come to play in the Premier League. So that's the first hurdle out the way.

The second is Rangers want to try and get a replacement striker in. Bad news is that Celtic have just signed Rangers target Pawel Brozek on loan from Trabzonspor.

The third and most important is the cash. Our sources say Everton have bid £8m, but want to pay it in installments, as do most clubs. Rangers want the bulk of it upfront. Hence the ongoing negotiations.

If it does come off it will  be an amazing coup for David Moyes and the club. Only a couple of weeks ago, most fans thought we wouldn't sign anyone. But Everton have signed Darron Gibson on a permenant deal and Landon Donovan on a loan deal.

Fingers crossed Everton may have 3 signings by the end of the transfer window at 11.00pm tomorrow. What's that one about counting your chickens?

Not moaning or whatever, just wanted to throw one point in quickly about our "striker crisis" ... we sold 2 strikers before the season started for about 5m combined?...They have both gone on to be in good scoring form (albeit Beckford in the Championship and FA Cup) and both now have more goals than we manage to score. I heard when Yak had 10 goals and missed the game against us at Goodison, he had scored more goals than we had scored as a team at home. My problems with that are: 1) Why did we not hang on to at least one of them and give them a chance to have this type of season with us? (Even if they had previously had personal problems with Moyes or whatever the issues were behind the scenes) and 2) In selling them, surely we should have been getting over 10m for them (combined) and then we would have been in an even better financial position to move on for this signing now and still have spare to look elsewhere too? Just a thought.

If this happens I hope it works, but as far as I can see this is £8m for a player who has a good goal ratio in a league that is no better in quality than Championship/League 1. With that in mind it looks overpriced. Then I look at reports that Spurs will sign Adabayour for £8m and it seems even more overpriced. All this said, I still don't think we need a striker, we need someone creative that can make chances, Donovan is only a two month sticking plaster that does not cover the wound left by the loss of Arteta. Even when Arteta was off form he had vision and guile and created things, nothing is being created other than from Baines crosses. Strikers cant put away chances that aren't there.

Do like the look of this lad - but to go against the grain of EVERY other comment more or less its a creative midfielder we need! Best strikers in the world can't score if there not getting good service. Our strikers aint bad - just low on confidence and not getting good service (apart from Bainesy maybe and Donovan but he doesnt count as won't around for long) COYB IMWT

An OK signing if it happens. I would rather spend the dosh an up and coming striker from the Championship...Jay Rodriguez from Burnley??? We'd have definitely got him. And a Moyes type player, works hard and knows where the goal is.

Yeah and the last tall striker we signed from Rangers in the Mickey Mouse scottish league didn't turn out to be much good either, Stand up Duncan Ferguson...... Have seen Jelavic playing and he is far more skillful and creative on and off the ball than JB is. Would suit us well with Bainesy to supply the amo, only wish we were keeping Landon to supply from the Right. Not counting chickens yet but this would be a progressive signing in my opinion. Agree with u there RobLeigh, was a disgrace to sell Beckford, he was lightning fast and his last action was running through the whole Chelsea team an chippin the keeper. Joint stop scorer for us in his first Prem season and he hardly started any games. Do like the look of this Jelavic though, reckon he'll be a class act

I think the wording "coup" is an extremely apt one in this instance. We started the window assuming we would bring nobody in due to the well documented financial situation. This being the case, we have still (seemingly) managed to attract a striker who, in his last two leagues has thrown around a record of 1/2 goals per game. Regardless of the quality of the respective leagues, the fact that we have signed anyone should be regarded as a coup by definition: A coup being an unexpected stroke, move or act. In response to the Beckford shout: I was a big fan of Beckford and really wanted him to do well. In hindsight we may have been able to get more out of him this season, especially considering his rich vein of form of late and Saha's complete reciprocal. However, the facts were that we got a player on a free in the summer and sold him for 4.5 Million the next summer; a very handsome profit which made excellent business sense. Sadly, I feel that Beckford's level is the Championship, however, one can wonder whether he would have done the business this year... All's I will say though is that Grant Halt and Steve Morrison have scored 7 and 8 goals this season for Norwich, this doesn't make them Premiership Quality all of a sudden...

I must say that despite being close to actually SPENDING money on a STRIKER im sick of hearing people moan! The fact is we need a striker and now we look like we are going to get one people still insist on looking at negatives and banging on about past players who may have done this and may have done that. As Evertonians we are used to being patient so lets give this lad a chance and you never know you could actually look at things in a different light instead of doom and gloom. If we dont spend people moan and when we do people moan, make ur mind up for f*cks sake and get behind the team and Moyes! IMWT

I'm not too sure about this one, if it happens then hopefully we have a goalscorer to transfer his ability from the Scottish league to ours as that is what we need!...But, if any of you want to know my opinions I'd rather try to get Landon permanently and I have explained that idea on the newest article about him. Cash down to LA, deal in place, after so many years half price buy-back if he wants to go and see his career out there when he is 35ish.

As a Rangers fan, I dont wont to see him go but would be happy to see him play in blue again and not red! He's premier quality. He'll do well if you get him.

Wish we could attract a youngish, British striker who was keen to prove themselves, on a low wage and wouldn't cost a lot..... HOLD ON A SEC!! WE HAD THAT IN JERMAINE BECKFORD! Scores 10 in his first season with not a lot of starts, then we sell him!!! Just show faith in a striker that scores goals (so not Saha). Just wish we got one more season outta JB, think he'd be that missing link....

Wikipedia has him down as an EFC player - and they usually are first to get it right. £7m apparently.

A middle finger to the Blue Union. Things are far from perfect but this would be a solid signing. I know Kenwright doesn't have the money that the others do, but he cares about the club a hell of a lot more than other chairmen (cough) Abramovich (cough).

"An amazing coup" ? Have you really written that without any hint of irony? Perhaps if you keep saying it you'll believe it. Oh, hang on, is that you, Bill?

No chance we havnt got £8 never mind £8 million. Would love to see him come here and prove himself as the Scottish league is a mickey mouse one.
