Landon Donovan was born on March 4, 1982, in Ontario, California to parents Donna Kenney-Cash, and Tim Donovan, a semi professional ice-hockey player. He grew up in Redlands, California.
When Donovan was six, he asked his mother to join an organized league, and scored seven goals in his first game.Landon was a member of Cal Heat - a club based in Rancho Cucamonga. In 1997, he was accepted into U.S. Youth Soccer's Olympic Development Program. He attended the Redlands East Valley High School in California. Bayer Leverkusen/San Jose Earthquakes
Later in 1999 Donovan signed for German club Bayer Leverkusen. Unhappy with his situation in Germany, he was loaned to San Jose Eathquakes for the 2001 season. In MLS, Donovan had immediate success, leading the Earthquakes to MLS Cup championships in 2001 and 2003 and becoming one of the most recognizable faces of soccer in America. In four years in the league, he scored 32 goals and 29 assists in league play, and 10 goals and six assists in the playoffs. Donovan was named USA Soccer Athlete of the Year in 2003.
In 2004 Donovan became the first man to be named U.S. Soccer Athlete of the Year two years in a row, before returning to Bayer Leverkusen in 2005.
After playing seven games with Leverkusen, only two of which were starts, Donovan stated his intentions to return to MLS. Despite a late offer from Pompey, Bayer Leverkusen officials respected his wishes. However, because San Jose GM Alexi Lalas had traded away Donovan's rights, the Los Angeles Galaxy, his hometown team, were able to trade their leading scorer to get around the problem just one week before the season started.
Los Angeles Galaxy
In his first season with the Galaxy, Donovan scored twelve league goals and ten assists and added four goals and an assist in the playoffs as the Galaxy won the MLS Cup (his third MLS championship to date). He was named to the MLS All-Time Best XI after the season.
In his second season with the Galaxy, Donovan scored twelve league goals and eight assists. Donovan also scored three goals in the Open Cup. Despite this, Donovan and the Galaxy failed to make the playoffs and lost in the Open Cup to Chicago Fire. Donovan's playoff goals make him MLS' second all-time leading scorer in the playoffs with fourteen.
Donovan had a mixed year with the Galaxy in 2007. Upon the signing and arrival of Beckham, Donovan relinquished his captaincy to the English superstar. In the 2007 Superliga tournament, Donovan was the top scorer. Donovan scored a goal in every game except for the final. Donovan now has eighty-four all-time regular season goals putting him in seventh place on the league's all time scoring list. Although the 2008 season was a disappointment for the Galaxy, it was a banner year for Donovan as he scored twenty goals and nine assists in twenty-five games.
Since the summer of 2008, Donovan had been linked with a move back to Europe during the January 2009 transfer window. In November 2008 he trained with Bayern Munich, and at the end of his training period, Bayern Munich entered into negotiations to acquire him on loan from the Los Angeles Galaxy, allowing Donovan to play for the German club until the start of the next MLS season in mid-March. Donovan made his friendly debut on January 10 against Al-Jazira Club, playing the full ninety minutes and assisting on a goal, he scored his first goal for the club in his second game, in a friendly against Al-Wehda.
Donovan made his competitive debut for Bayern in their 5-1 win over Stuttgart on January 27, 2009, coming on as a sixty-sixth minute substitute, he made his Bundesliga debut on January 30, 2009, against Hamburg, as a seventy-seventh minute substitute. He ended up with a total of four goals scored in five friendly matches for Bayern, but did not score any in league play.The team declined to extend his loan.
After his former national team manager Bruce Arena was named Galaxy head coach and Beckham joined AC on loan in early 2009, Donovan once again was given the club captaincy on a permanent basis. Landon calleed Beckham a poor captain and teammate .Donovan enjoyed an outstanding 2009 campaign, winning the league's MVP award and leading the Galaxy to MLS Cup 2009, which they lost on penalties. Following the season Donovan agreed to a four-year extension to his contract with the Galaxy, with clauses that allow the player to seek loans during the MLS offseason.
Landon Donovan joined Everton on loan from LA Galaxy in January 2010 until the start of their season, in late March. He was given the number 9 shirt. He made his debut for the Toffees against on January 9 in a 2-2 draw and set up Everton's first goal with a corner.
Donovan went on to start his next game with the club on January 16 in a 2-0 win over Sitteh. Landon contributed a full 90 plus minutes to the game until his substitution in the 91st minute. He exited the field to a standing ovation from the Everton fans. Donovan scored his first Everton goal against Sunderland on January 27 in a 2:0 home win.
Landon has over 100 caps for USA.
Landon returned to LA Galaxy in March 2010 after a very sucessful loan spell at Everton. He scored his second goal during the spell in his last game at Goodison, a 5-1 thrashing of Hull City. Chants of USA, USA rang around the ground and Landon would be warmly welcomed should he chose to return.
Landon agreed to join Everton for a second time when he signed on 1st January 2012 on a short term contract.
