Contract Stuff

Davey thinks that his mates with just one year left on their contract will have to play better to either get another contract or get the chance to be offered one somewhere else.

Davey says:"“Everybody is playing for the future. The game is changing now and the contracts are getting shorter.
"It is becoming much more of a case of seeing how things go season to season and that is something players have to get used to. There are a lot of contracts up next season, so there are a lot of players playing for their futures. The players have just got to get on with their football and do what they do best.
“How people react to that can differ. Some people will be thinking: ‘I will show you, I deserve a contract’ and some players will be thinking ‘I only have a year left and I need to protect myself.’; It all depends on a player’s mindset." (05/04/04)

Back To Business

Davey was back in the groove with a tremendous performance against Chelsea. It hasn't gone too well for him this season with injuries and suspensions but he hopes to play a major part for the rest of the season.

Davey says:"It is good to get a full game under my belt. That is what it is all about and that is why you do the job.I have been quite lucky throughout my career because I have always played week in, week out and have never really been troubled by injuries. But maybe this season is my turn to suffer and now that is put to bed now.

"It would be nice to play a part in the games we have left. We are only really looking above us now. We want to climb the table and not worry about what is happening below us. I felt fine after the game. I have been working hard in training, even though I have not been involved, because I have been fit for quite a while now and I have wanted to be ready for games like this one when the chance came along. It has not been hard to keep myself motivated because you just want to get back playing as quickly as possible."(19/04/04)

Davey Loses Appeal

It's a sham of a sham. Davey has lost his appeal so he will miss the games against Boro, Newcastle and Spurs. (17/03/04)

Still Waiting

Davey Weir who is lined up for the rezzies tonight, is still awaiting to hear news on his appeal, after his sending off last week. A tape of the incident has been sent to the Advisory Panel, were hopefully they will agree with Moyesy, that Davey had been dealt with harshly.

Moyesy says: "We have made an appeal and are awaiting a reply and hopefully we will hear something later in the week." (16/03/04)

Shell Shocked

Davey Weir admitted he was shocked to be given his marching orders, in last night's rezzie defeat at Blackburn. He supposedly kicked out at ex Rangers defender Lorenzo Amoroso, after it was claimed the Italian said he was better looking, and had a better tan, than Weir's team mate 'Sandro Pistone. Before heading off to have his nails done, Amoruso denied all knowledge of the conversation taking place.

Davey says: "I was completely shocked by the referee’s decision. I wasn’t even expecting him to speak to me to be honest. I just tried to get the ball back. The referee said I kicked him, which I didn’t do. It’s a massive disappointment and not an ideal situation because I’m looking at a suspension after just coming back from injury. I hope common sense will prevail and that there’s a video that shows I didn’t kick him and it will get over-turned."(11/03/04)

Saving The Best Till Last

Davey Weir is confident that the Blues can secure the points needed to maintain their Premiership status, and also he thinks are best form is yet to come. With every place up the table worth half a million big ones, and our financial position on par with Accrington Stanley, every game till the end of the season should have something on it.

Davey says: "The top three have put a little bit of distance between themselves and the rest and everybody else is fighting for the scraps, really. But there are a lot of places to fight for and a lot of positions to fight for. We feel that the best of our season is still to come. There are points to play for and there are places to play for. We know that if we get a good run and pick up a few points, we can start going towards the other end of the table, where we feel we should be." (06/03/04)

Earlier Than Expected

Davey was pleased to be back playing so early after his injury setback. He played the full 90 last night in Ireland and wants more of the same.

Davey says: I needed a game under my belt and I really enjoyed it. It’s been earlier than expected, returning from the injury, but you just try to get back whenever you are ready. I feel that I am now and hopefully, in the next few weeks, I can continue to make progress, but I’m ready whenever the manager wants me. I want to play, but that is, of course, the manager’s decision.”(03/03/04)

Not Far Off Now

Everton physio Basil Rathbone, believes it now won't be long till Davey Weir is pressing for a first team recall. He is back in full training, and Basil is more than delighted with the Scots man's progress. He is however very short of match practice, and needs to get a couple of rezzie run outs to get back to full fitness.

Basil Rathbone says: "The initial problem started way back when we played Chelsea in November when he sustained a nasty medial ligament injury. He was out for six weeks and then he trained and played for six weeks as he was okay. But unfortunately, at the reserve game against Manchester United in Altrincham, he caught his studs in the turf and just tweaked his knee again. Having reviewed his knee and the scans a couple of days later with the consultant, it seemed that it was nowhere near as bad as we’d first thought. But obviously you have to treat the clinical picture and not the scans. You’re treating the human being and not a series of pictures. He’s had four weeks of tough rehab and done extremely well. He’s jumped; twisted and turned, block tackled and joined in full training on Monday. It’s only match practice that he’s short of now. Unfortunately, I think he was back in training for six weeks over the Christmas period. But during that time, I think he only had two games of football, so since he sustained the injury back in November, his opportunity for match practice has been limited. There’s no game this week unfortunately for him either, so I would think he needs a few games." (24/02/04)

On The Mend

Davy is ahead of schedule on his road to recovery.

Mick Rathbone said: "David Weir has seen a consultant on Friday and has been given the go ahead to go into the final stages of his rehabilitation. That now means he can start kicking, twisting and turning and hopefully, barring any reaction, he’s only going to be a couple of weeks away.”(15/02/04)

Two Months

The x ray result have confirmed that Davie Weir has badly sprained the medial ligaments in his knee. He could be out for up to 8 weeks.

Mick Rathbone said:“He faces a lengthy lay-off - at least a couple of months, though fortunately there is no damage to the cartilage or the cruciate. It is pretty bad luck for David as he has been back in training now for the past six weeks after recovering from a similar problem.”(24/01/03)

Stretchered Off

Davy Weir was stretchered off after 35 minutes of last night's reserve game against Manchester United. He twisted awkwardly on what was a cabbage patch of a pitch and looks as though he could be out for a while, the full extent of the injury will be revealed later today.
This is a sickener for Davy as he has just fought his way back from a similar injury incurred against Chelsea last November. Moyesy will be sick too as Joey Yobo is away on his jolleys until early Feb. (23/01/04)

Playing Soon

Everton were handed more good news today in the defensive department, with the news that Davey Weir is not far off first team action. Weir who limped out of the home defeat to Chelsea over six weeks ago, has been given the green light to start training with his team mates again

Davey says: I’ll come back in whenever I’m needed really, I’ll just try and get as much training in as I can and the sooner I can get back the better. I’ve been seeing the consultant every two weeks so that was the final visit really yesterday. He just said that everything was ok and I can start training now, which is what I’ve wanted to do for a long time. I’ll start training with the team and start to get involved again, and hopefully I’ll get a reserve game soon, just take it day by day and hopefully everything will go well. It’s unfortunate that there’s no reserve game for a few weeks. But if there aren’t any games then I’ll just have to up the training and things like that and try to do it that way." (17/12/03)

Moyesy says: "David’s been given the all-clear. He’s been training hard in as much as that he’s been running and getting physically in a good condition. He just hasn’t joined in with the lads yet. Hopefully by the end of this week David Weir will get in amongst the players if everything goes well and he has no problems after his injury then he could be back in amongst us over the Christmas period when we’re going to need the players." (17/12/03)

Out for 6 Weeks?

Davie Weir limped off yesterday following a block tackle on Chelsea's Mutu and inital signs are not good. He has some knee damage and it will be Monday before the full extent of the injury can be assessed but it is thought it could be ligament damage and he could be out for 6 weeks. Weir has fought his way back to first choice alongside Joey Yobo and this is a cruel blow he has been instrumental in the recent clean sheets, hopefully the damage will not be as bad as first thought. Get well soon Davie - we need you!

Moyesy says: "David Weir had a medial ligament injury in a block tackle and it tweaked his ligaments.(02/11/03)

First Game of Season

Sitting on the bench or in the stands is something Davie Weir hasn't done much. He has been a fixture in the defence during his Everton career, but Moyesy has preferred Yobo & Stubbs as the central defensive partnership this season, so it was a welcome sight to see Davie playing his 1st game of the season against Stockport last night.

Alan Irvine says: "It's the first clean sheet for a long time and our great run in the Premiership last season came on the back of a number of clean sheets. It's important we get back to being difficult to break down and being a team difficult to score against, as that is what most people said about us last season. If you get it right at the back and keep it tight, then you've always got a chance." (25/09/03)

Helping The Youngsters

Helping the young lads on their first trainng trip to Austria is one of the duties, David Weir, as an experienced International, has taken on board.

Davie says: "They learn what they need to do to get themselves ready for the next session. The manager has brought all the young lads over here and they'll be watching and learning to see what's required to make that next step up. You do have time on your hands and it just depends how you use it. With the amount of effort that you put into your training, you should be using the spare time to rest and recover. That's a lesson that has got to be learned & using your free time to prepare." (15/08/03)
