The Manager Of The People's Club - David Moyes - 04/05

Miraculous

Moyesy believes what his Everton side has achieved this season is nothing short of miraculous. On a shoe string budget, Moyesy has catapulted Everton into the Champions League, and was recently awarded the League Managers' Association Manager of the Year, for his efforts. After a short break, Moyesy is back in business were he has said he will turn water into wine, and make 5000 loaves, out of a cardboard box. Honest !!

Moyesy says: "I never thought that we would achieve what we have done. Nobody could have told me that we would be in the Champions League. It was a dream. For us to come from the position that we were in is nothing short of miraculous really. I don’t know how many words I could use to say that.

A lot of teams were really confident that we would fall and maybe they had reasons to think that. It was a case of trying to get enough points and I knew roughly how many we would need. Last year 60 points qualified for the Champions League but an average over the last five or six years was 66 points. In my mind we had to get 66 points to qualify for the Champions League. As it was we got 61, more than last year’s total. We’ve been value for it, no matter what anybody says or thinks of Everton we’ve done the best we could and if people think it’s disappointing that Everton finished in fourth then it’s not us that they should be disappointed in it should be the other teams who weren’t able to achieve more points than we got.

I think everybody’s looking at Everton and thinking it’s great to see a big club coming back to the fore again. We’ve improved as the season’s gone on. I thought we took a lot of confidence. At the start of the season I think it was important that we gave the supporters something back after the disappointment of last year where we lost our last five games. I think what they had to see was at least we were going to roll our sleeves up and compete and be hard to beat and make sure we were always in with a chance of winning the games." (20/05/05)

Lower League Search

Moyesy may scour the lower divisions again in search of another nugget like we found in Tim Cahill last season. He added with a word of caution though, that he won't be paying over the odds for players not proven at this level. Over to you Sir David.

Moyesy says: "We picked up Tim Cahill from Millwall in the Championship and he has been a tremendous acquisition. We are still looking in that division, but you find that the good ones are all being priced at £4million, and you don't take a punt on a player for that sort of money. For that money you want someone who has been there and done it. We paid £1.5m for Tim, and everybody would look at that as an acceptable risk. Paying £4million for Championship players is not the market we would be going into." (20/05/05)

Manager Of The Year

David Moyes has been named the League Managers' Association Manager of the Year.

David Moyes says: "I have won this award but it is an award which should go to everybody at Everton. From where we started the season there were concerns about what may happen but I have to praise the players for how well they have performed, my back-room staff for their efforts and all the supporters who have been fantastic throughout the season. Even last night people were talking to me about Everton's supporters and about how great it is to see Goodison reminiscent of years gone by."

"I thought Jose Mourinho was going to win it. So to get this award from my fellow managers is terrific. I have a great appreciation of how difficult all football management jobs are and I think my fellow managers realised how difficult the Everton job looked last summer. People were telling me last night what an incredible feat it is for Everton to be in the Champions League. They realised that there have been some teams who have finished below us who may have better players and better squads. It has been a tough season. We were under a lot of pressure from March onwards when the gap between us and the sides below us was closing. We had to try and keep our nerve.

But I have just been doing my job. I don't feel I have done anything extraordinary. I am paid to get the best out of every player and to try and achieve the best results for the club. I have a great staff around me. Alan Irvine is a terrific coach and a terrific teacher of football. His passion is to try and improve players and we are both students of the game. We will always have good football discussions and we enjoy being in that environment.

Then I have Jimmy Lumsden, who is a football nut. I have known him for years and I trust both him and Alan explicitly. We also have Andy Holden, who is not afraid to tell us if we are not getting it right. He gives us a realistic view of things, a balanced view."

Tributes have been made on his fantastic acheivement.

Bill Kenwright : "Nobody is more thrilled than I am. I have always said and believed that David should be Manager of the Year. He is extraordinarily committed, extraordinarily focused, extraordinarily driven and extraordinarily talented - all attributes that make up a great manager. He has been with us three seasons now. In his first season he almost got us into Europe, now he has taken us into the Champions League qualifiers - I always believed his second season was simply a blip."

"He and his players have given us the opportunity not only to challenge for European footballs biggest honour but also once more to walk with a spring in our step and a smile on our faces."

Keith "Bully" Wyness:"This is the most valuable managerial award because it is voted for by your peers. They are best placed to judge what kind of job a manager has done because they understand it better than anyone else can. It is nice to see that this award is confirming what we already knew at Everton - that David Moyes has had a fantastic season. It is fully deserved."

Howard Kendall: "It's a respect David has certainly deserved from other managers. They appreciate the job he has done. It's a tremendous honour. The vote takes into account resources as well as results. That's possibly why he has edged out Mourinho, who has had a vast amount of money to spend. For him to edge out the Championship winner, whose team romped away with the title, is a tremendous achievement."

Over it

David Moyes is over the Arsenal game and is proud of what his team has achieved this season.

Moyesy says: "I've not got over it. But we move on. At the start of the season we wanted to stay in the Premiership, we achieved that by Christmas. Then we wanted Champions League football and we have achieved that.Arsenal played very well, they are a top side but I am interested only in Everton, not Arsenal. have learned plenty from my team all season, so one bad night isn't going to make all the good things we have done this season seem wrong.

"As for the Arsenal game, that's football for you, just when you think you are getting good at it, things happen that shows you to treat every game the same. Whatever match it is, reserve team or first team, they mean something. It brings you back down to earth very quickly, but if people have watched us all season they will already have seen the real Everton. It's still been a brilliant season for Everton, terrific. The best I have had for many a long year." (13/05/05)

World Domination Put on Hold

Moyesy has put all thoughts of conquering Europe next season on hold, as he concentrates on bettering our finish of this season in the Premiership. Before World domination begins, Moyesy's objective is to put Everton back at the top of the tree in England. Premiership you have been warned.

Moyesy says: "I came to Everton to win trophies and that is what we are building towards. But as always the bread and butter will be the Premier League. We will be trying to put together a team this summer which is capable of doing well in the Premier League again next season. That is our first objective.

Reaching the Champions League will be good for us and good for the club because it has raised Everton's profile across Europe. It means we can attract better players who will be interested by what we are doing now. But it has to be gradual progress if we want to build something lasting." (10/05/05)

Best Team In The City

When the likes of Rafabeneathus, Stevie 'I'm off soon' G, and that other redshite dipstick John Arnold Riesling have been mouthing off saying they'll get the 4th place, the manager of the People's Club, has kept a dignified silence, letting his players do the talking on the pitch. Moyesy has now put it straight.

Moyesy says: "It feels great. It's been a long haul and it's been terrific getting there. I'm really delighted with it now. I did feel that Liverpool and Bolton were pushing us really hard and there was an awful lot of confidence coming out of Liverpool about who was the best team in the city. I felt under pressure but I never said that we had got the best players. I felt we had a good team and though we had a small squad if we could keep them all fit I thought we would have a chance. To do it is a dream come true, it's a massive achievement for Everton Football Club.

I didn't have any fears. I trust the people in The FA and have a lot of belief in the system. I knew the rules. The team who wins the Champions League should have the opportunity to contest it but that isn't necessary the rules of this country. If that had happened I thought there would have been uproar, it would have been a disgrace and it could have caused problems in this city. There is no denying that Everton are the best team in the city this season."
(08/05/05)

Its A Gamble

Moyesy is willing to gamble on players fitness, with the end of the season only ten days away. Tiny Tim however will be left out of the final run in if he does not recover in time, as Moyesy believes he has played far too much footy in the last twelve months.

Moyesy says: "There are only three games to go so we may ask people to take risks if they are not 100% fit, but we won’t ask Tim to do that because he has played so much football in the last 12 months. It is unlikely for the weekend but things are looking much better now than they were on Saturday." (04/05/05)

You Are The Best

Big Keith, Everton's CEO, has praised Moyesy's work, and he rates him as the best young Manager in the World game. His fellow Scot has guided Everton back to Europe after ten years, and hopefully with another two wins to Europe's Premier Competition, on a shoestring budget. Manager of the Year, hear, hear.

Big Keith says: "There has been a lot of talk about David being the manager of the year and he deserves that. He is recognised as one of the best young managers, maybe not just in this country but throughout football. He is a pleasure to work with because he wants to excel, he is completely focused on his job and, without exception, he always has the best interests of the club at heart." (28/04/05)

Mental Strength

Moyesy is putting the mental strength of his squad as one of the main reasons for our fantastic march towards Europe this season. Everton's will to win has been apparent this season, as they have not been out of the top four since the Autumn. Remember Arsenal back last August, who'd have thought it.

Moyesy says: "We have five or six players throughout the team who are really tough mentally. But they are also still improving and getting stronger in that respect. This season I have seen our players getting into the habit of winning and thinking 'we should be winning and we are capable of winning' no matter who they are playing. They understand that we have to be at our top level all the time if we want to win games and achieve success. We have a number of players with a very tough attitude who make it difficult for the opposition no matter what the situation in the game. That attitude gives the squad added confidence. We have had some bad results at times but in every game I know the players have done their best.

But they have not just got themselves into a good condition physically. Mentally we have been much tougher this season. We have never given up. That is an attitude that has ensured we have almost always been in with a chance of winning games or taking something from games right up to the final whistle. We keep going, we keep trying and we have not been scared to throw caution to the wind in pursuit of a result. If we have been in a losing position or if we have been level on terms we have tried to be adventurous, although some people may perceive it as desperation. We are always willing to try things to get points and on a number of occasions this season we have scored late goals to get those points." (27/04/05)

Magnificent

David Moyes is over the moon about Everton getting into Europe, but is hoping for that little bit more.

Moyesy says: "The players have done everything they can, we are really pleased with the way the season has gone here and we are optimistic that we can finish on an even more positive note. Considering what people were saying about us at the beginning of the season, this is a magnificent effort by the lads.

The critics were predicting that we would be relegated after we lost on the first day to Arsenal, so to get any sort of European qualification is a tremendous achievement. "It is fantastic that we are still there at this stage of the season, most teams only have three games left but we have four and it underlines what a fantastic season it has been for Everton that we still occupy a top-four position." (26/04/05)

My Best Yet

Moyesy would class leading the club into the Champions League as his greatest ever managerial achievement. With the club on the verge of a return to Europe next season, it is to be decided whether it is in the UEFA Cup, or Champions League. With six games to go Everton find themselves in the driving seat, still a point ahead of ahead of Bolton, with two games in hand. C'mon you Blue Boys.

Moyesy says: "For me, getting Everton into the Champions League would be my greatest managerial achievement so far in my career, but that's a way to go yet. Of course we would be thrilled, as would most clubs maybe with the exception of four or five who plan every year for the Champions League. They budget for the Champions League and buy their players for that competition, we didn't so any European competition would be terrific for us." (20/04/05)

Got To Have A System

With 6 games to go, Moyesy is happy to use the 442 formation or the 451 system.

Moyesy says: “We found a way of playing earlier in the season which carried us through for a period of the season, but we could now find different ways of playing in the remaining games, as we did last weekend. The end of the season is not far away and we do have players who can play in different roles which could work to our advantage.” (17/04/05)

Simple, Just Win

Moyesy's message ahead of another Sunday game is a simple one; just win it. The Blues meet Palace on Sunday, and could feasibly be playing to regain fourth spot from the shite who play at Shiiiiitttteeeh twenty four hours earlier. City like Everton are due a win, so who knows, it could be four points again come Sunday night.

Moyesy says: "Our home games are going to be vital but as always the next game is the most important. This match on Sunday afternoon takes on extra significance – we have to win it. Every game we play in the next few weeks is hugely meaningful and that is what we wanted and that is what we wanted. How often in the last 10 years have Everton entered this point of the season with something positive to play for?

We want games to mean something and that is what we have got." (07/04/05)

No Pressure

Moyesy is still happy with Everton's progress this season and will continue not to talk about possible Champions League qualification.

Moyesy says: "We have never been thinking about the Champions League, only about having the best season we possibly can and at this moment we are close to that. We are not thinking about the Champions League. We think we are in a very good position. We haven’t run out of steam. We have a tremendous points total early on and after 31 games it is wrong to judge us on the last three. The league table doesn’t lie.

There is no fear about not getting in the Champions League because we weren’t expected to be there. There is no pressure on the players at all. They are still doing the right things and I cannot ask for any more." (04/04/05)

Ahead Of Schedule

Even with the dip in form since Christmas, Moyesy still thinks Everton's form over the season has been terrific.

Moyesy says: “It depends how you look at it. If you assess it from the start of the season you’d have to say that Everton’s form has been terrific but looking at the shorter period then it’s not been so good. We lost a very good player after Christmas and we knew it would be difficult to replace him. But the players we’ve got here have been great and they’ve done their best all the time. You can’t ask for more than that. No Everton supporter that we’d be in 4th position at the start of the season so from that point of view we are ahead of schedule. We’d like to stay there but if we don’t, there’s no shame in that whatsoever. We’ll try to finish as high as we can.” (03/04/05)

No April Joke, Everton Aren't Skint

Sir David Moyes is to be handed a £12m boost to his transfer kitty this Summer. Big Keith Wyness has assured Moyesy, that the club will not be borrowing the money, as it is cash they have in the coffers from a bank job or something. Contrary to reports the cash will not be in used twenties, and the notes are cosha. THIS IS NO APRIL FOOL, though it sounds like one.

Big Keith says: "David will have a significant transfer fund. It will probably be something close to £30 million to spend during the summer, but supporters must understand the split. Say £12 million of that is transfer money, the rest would be needed for wages and there are about a dozen players who have still not signed new deals.

It is a good picture, but it is also prudent and within what is sensible. This is not money we are going to be borrowing, which is very important. This is money in front of us." (01/04/05)

Moyesy's Back, and Raring To Go

Moyesy, himself back from an Easter break with his family, is saying that his players should not be suffering from fatigue, after he gave them all five days off, over the weekend. The gaffer has used the International break to give the majority of his squad, some time to get away with the family. Only Killa, Tiny and Joey had to turn out to represent their countries, and Moyesy will be keeping a close eye on their fitness, as the squad reassembled at Bellefield yesterday. Physio Basil Rathbone is on standby to run tests on all the squad for high chocolate content in their system.

Moyesy says: "The Easter weekend gave most of our players the opportunity to have a break and spend some time with their families. It has given us time to recharge batteries and now we are back to work and focused on the job in hand. There can be no excuses as far as fatigue is concerned. We are ready to go." (31/03/05)

Good to Great

Whatever European Trophy Everton end up competing for next season, most Blues will agree it was beyond our expectations to even think of ourselves in this position, so late in the season. Moyesy is looking at the last nine games, as turning a good season into a great season. Hear, hear, we would say fantastic season.

Moyesy says: "Our football this season has probably exceeded a lot of expectations. We are now in a position where, if we continue to carry on playing as we have then it could prove to be a great season for us. At the moment, it’s a good season. The last nine games will decide whether or not it turns into a great season." (19/03/05)

Another Weekend, Another Game

Moyesy is doing what he does best, and that is trying to play down Sunday's game at Analfield. Moyesy is treating it as just another game, as he continues to defy the critics, and keep the Blues in fourth place. Whatever happens on Sunday, remember, we will still be in fourth, in the driving seat, several points ahead of them. Come on you Toffeemen.

Moyesy says: "Everybody knows the importance of the game, I don't need to impress that upon anybody. We are comfortable with the position we are in right now and whatever happens on Sunday we will still be in fourth place. We are in a good position, a position every other club bar the top three would love to be in. That is a healthy position but we also know that if we don't play well that position will dwindle away.

I am trying to treat it the same as any other game. We will go there with our usual attitude and we want to win every game. That is what we will try to do on Sunday. We are just trying to make sure we keep up the same levels of performance we have been producing all season." (18/03/05)

Modest Moyesy

While Alan Irvine is praising the manager for being the number one man at the club, Moyesy is being as modest as ever.

Moyesy says: “I just see myself as doing a job which thousands of people would love to do,” he said. Lots of people would like to be manager of Everton, so I am very privileged to have that position. Otherwise I do what I have to do. I train the players and I work with them and at the end of the day, it’s the players who go out and do the job. They are the ones who deserve the praise because they perform week in, week out.” (12/03/05)

3 Years Of Progress

Moyesy will be celebrating three years in charge of the People's Club on Monday, and although he has made progress, he still expects Everton to be performing consistently well like the successful team of the 80's.

Moyesy says: "We have probably been in the top 10 more in the last three years than we have been for a long time. So there has been improvement. But now we have to make sure that is a regular thing.

When I came here I said I wanted us to get away from being a club that regarded avoiding relegation as a success. That is something that couldn't be changed overnight. It was about changing the attitude, bringing in a new winning attitude and that is something people have grasped now and when the attitude changes in and around the club, it changes outside as well.

The supporters are beginning to see more success in terms of us winning games, but they have seen some very successful teams at this club over the years and we still have a lot of work to do. Over the next three years I want to continue that progress and development. I am more interested in the next three years than the last three.

The team in the 80s was terrific and far better than what we have got at this present time. That was because they proved themselves by winning things and beating the best. I wouldn't mention us in the same breath as those people - not yet anyway. But what we want to do is change things - we want to try and bring that kind of success back to the club. That will take time. But if we can progress in the next three years as we have progressed in the last three we will be heading in the right direction.

I am not ready to judge how I view this season. I will rate this season when it is over. I remember describing last season as the worst I have experienced as a manager. A big factor in that assessment was the way we finished. There are still nine games to play of this season. That is a lot of football. You get no prizes in March. And now is not the time to be making judgments." (11/03/05)

We're Not Daft

The Manager of The People's Club believes his team has the ability and the determination to bounce back again, as they get ready for the 9 game run in.

Moyesy says: "We've kicked on after a few bad results before this season when people were thinking we couldn't hang on. And we will have to try and surprise them again. They still might be right about us but I know the players can kick on again. They have been great all season.”

We are still in a very good position in the table but we are not daft and we are not going to say anything is definite. We know that teams can sometimes go on a seven or eight-game unbeaten run at this stage of the season and that can have a big impact on the table. That is exactly what happened to us two years ago. Blackburn went on an unbelievable run and piped us to a UEFA Cup place. It was extremely disappointing not to make the UEFA Cup two years ago but hopefully we have more experience now about what we have to do for the rest of the season." (11/03/05)

Have A Kit Kat

David Moyes is happy to have a nice long break before the next game.

Moyesy explains: "When we knew we were going to have a free weekend we had things planned so the players would do some training to keep them ticking over. But we have also made sure they get some time off. We have had a hectic schedule in the last few months. This break gives them a chance to recharge, mentally as much as physically. It will do them no harm to take their heads away from it for a few days. And then we can come in next week ready to focus fully on our next match."(10/03/05)

Down, But Not Out

Down but not out. That seems to be the rallying call echoing out of Goodison today. Moyesy as ever has been playing down talk of Champions League football, but lets all remember we are still in the driving seat.

Moyesy says: "We have not been talking about fourth. We think we have had a good season and anything else is a bonus. The players are down because they know they did not perform, although I haven’t had to say that about them many times this season. Ideally we would like to get this result right out of our system straight away but we have picked ourselves up from bad results in the past and we will do so again. This, however, was right down in the bottom echelons when it comes to our performances this season, though a lot of credit must go to Blackburn and Mark Hughes." (07/03/05)

Letter From David Moyes (01/03/05)

Dear Evertonian,

Saturday was a great afternoon to be a supporter of this club and I hope everyone was left feeling elated as we all did on the team bus as we headed back to Merseyside.

Everyone here has enjoyed your tremendous support all throughout the season and I thought that really was personified by the way in which the crowd reacted at Aston Villa.

I don't need to tell anyone how much you have all helped since we set out last August and how big a part you can play in helping us trying to achieve something this season.

Against Blackburn on Sunday, and in the remaining games, we need your help because there is no doubting that this is probably one of the most important periods of a season the club has had for years and years.

We want full houses at every game, we want supporters to be vociferous and shout for absolutely every decision like they have been; as I believe it does make a difference.

Since I have been here at Everton all the supporters have been tremendous and right now we need the backing to give the players, who I think have done well all season, that extra push.

Everybody - the players and supporters - have pulled together this season in the face of adversity and now is a testing time for us all.

We all need to stick together and face up to the challenge we have got to complete in the final 10 games of this campaign.

Thank-you for your continued support and I look forward to meeting many of you between now and May 14.

David Moyes
