Davey Weir is delighted with his, and his team mates achievements in qualifying for Europe, but adds there is still work to be done to qualify for the big one. He believes everyone has contributed to the clubs success this season, but the hard works carries on this week at Fulham. It was there two years ago that Everton blew there chance of European qualification, when they lost 2-0, then lost at home to Man ure the week after. As a consequence, Blackburn pipped Everton to the last UEFA Cup spot. No better time to make amends lads. Davey
says: "It’s a big achievement for the club. It’s great.
It’s nice to have that to look forward to. Everyone’s contributed, I think
that’s the secret of our success. We’ve all worked together; no one deserves
to be singled out. It’s all about the unit, working together, helping
each other. There’s a lot of self belief and determination and coupled
with hard work, I think that’s why we are where we are at this stage.
But we realise that there is a lot left to play for, there’s a bigger
prize on offer if we keep this season going. We still have got obstacles in our way - the next one is Fulham. We’ve treated every game as if it was our last and I am sure we’ll do that until the end of the season. It would be impressive for everyone if we qualified for the Champions League, it’s the pinnacle of club football and it would be a great honour to be involved in it. But there is a lot of hard work to do between now and the end of the season to achieve it." (27/04/05) Davey Weir is confident the Palace win can give the team the boost it needed for the final push.
Davey says:"We had lost three on the trot, but we
have recovered well and also responded to the critics. We hope now that
our little stumble is over and the Palace victory has given everyone a
real lift." After the West Brom defeat, and with the shite hot on our tails, Davey Weir is saying what we have already done this season will count for nothing if we fail in our European dream. After three straight defeats, this Sunday has the usual ring of a must win game. C'mon boys we can do it. Davey says: "We just need to start winning games. We can talk about how well we have been doing this season but at the end of the day it is all in the past and it is what we do week-in, week-out now. The last three games haven’t gone as we would like and we have to address that. We need to get-together, come out as a group and realise that is now or never for us. We have to continue working as hard as we can and be ready for the final seven games and give our best for Everton Football Club. Every game is massive, Sunday was massive and it is now a test of character. We have got to respond in the right way, we’ve got to come out fighting and we have got to start winning games." (05/04/05) Davie believes that Everton must start winning games if they are to stay in fourth spot and capture a Champions League place. Davie says: "We have to say we are on a level playing field now. We have got to start winning some games now. We have got to regroup and get back on track because there is still a long way to go." (22/03/05) Davie Weir put in another tremendous performance against Villa and he believes the teams destiny this season is in the players hands. Davie says: "A couple of years ago we got to this stage and were doing equally as well but it all went wrong at the death. It is up to us whether that happens again or we carry to achieve our goals. We are in the position of being able to control what happens to us. We know there is a big prize waiting for us, it is up to us to grasp it. We certainly made the point on Saturday at Villa. A lot of people were building it up as the game we would likely lose and let Liverpool back in. "So we responded in the right way and hopefully we can continue to do so. It's nice to be where we are and it is very rare that the club has been above Liverpool, that's the bottom line." (02/03/05) Ex Everton manager Walter Smith, who is now the Scottish Coach, has brought in form Everton defender Davey Weir out of the International wilderness. Weir who had a well publicised fall out with then Jock boss Berti Mc Vogts, vowed never to play for his country again. Now that the German has been sent packing, good old Walter has talked Davey round. Good news for the Jocks, is it bad news for us. Watch this space. Davey says: "Walter phoned me up to see if I was interested and I was interested. I said I would speak to the manager here at Everton and speak to some other people including my family just to get their opinion. Obviously I have played for Walter before and I respect him as a man and enjoyed working under him and that made the decision that bit easier. When I did stop playing it was pretty final for me but football changes quickly and circumstances change. I never 100 per cent ruled it out but when I made my initial decision I wasn’t going back. In international football there is a lot of travelling involved and it takes up a lot of your time but I am realistic in that I’m 34 and it isn’t going to last forever. Hopefully it is a new start. It has been a bad two or three years with a lot of negativity, so hopefully now we can get back on track and be a bit more positive." (28/01/05) Don't write us off. That was the rallying call from Everton defender Davey Weir. He's got a point you know, as it was only our fourth defeat of the season. We still lie fourth, five points ahead of Boro, six points ahead of the shite, fuck me, it's not all bad. Davey says: "I’m sure people are starting to write us off now and saying ‘the bubble’s burst’, but we have to prove them wrong. We’re disappointed. We’ve felt that we’ve put in a lot of effort and we thought we deserved something at the Valley. But Tottenham is the next game and that will be a really difficult game. It’s all about how we react. I think we can play better than we did at Charlton, but we have to grind out results as well. It looked as if we were getting a decent point away from home, but unfortunately in the last ten minutes the game changed and we couldn’t get it back." (30/12/04) Davey Weir is in talks with the Toffeemen to extend his contract for at least another season. This is great news for Davey and well and truly deserved. He has been outstanding for Everton this season. Keith "A Bit Of Bully" Wyness: "We are in talks with his agent at present and are in the process of discussing the parameters of any deal."(23/12/04) The voice of experience that is Davey Weir is telling the troops, all that matters now is carrying on our good form, starting at Blackburn this weekend. Whilst we have earned bragging rights over the shite, till the Analfield clash, Davey does not want any of the Everton squad to get too complacent, and rest on their laurels. Hear, hear. Davey Weir says: " I’m delighted. It’s been a great season, it just keeps on getting better and better. We just want to enjoy it and keep things going. We believe that we can win every game. We realise that we have to work hard, we have to stick together as a team, and if we do that we will be a match for anyone in the Premier League. We don't want to rest on our laurels and say we have achieved anything yet. I think you start taking your eye off the ball if you make statements and look too far into the future. If you start making predictions you will soon fall back into trouble. The only thing that matters is the next game at Blackburn." (14/12/04) The Everton Fans Can Help Us Win The Derby Everton's veteran defender reckons the superb Everton Fans can help the team win Saturday's Derby game. Davie says: “The derby is unique, but is similar to other games in that it’s all about how you perform on the day. The three points are what the match is all about. It’s the bottom line in any game you play in, but this time, pride comes with the points, so that gives it a bit of extra significance. The results and our position in the table is extremely satisfying because we know that the fans are really appreciating it. They’ve been behind us and encouraged us when things haven’t been going our way. They’ve never failed to give us their backing so it’s nice for them to have something to cheer about. Hopefully, they are enjoying the run and making the most of it. Let’s keep our fingers crossed that they can have a good Christmas and New Year, beginning on Saturday.” (09/12/04) Davey says: “In a lot of games this season I don’t think people would have thought we’d have been able to come back, but we’ve been quite resilient and proved our doubters wrong. The Bolton match was a remarkable game. To be behind twice and come back twice was a fantastic achievement, but to nick it at the end was even better. Every win is a great win in this league. You’ve really got to earn your points in the Premier League and we did that against Bolton. We had to stand up and be counted and I think everyone in the team did that. It was a physical game and we showed that we wouldn’t be bullied. We’re working hard for each other and getting the rewards right now. I don’t know if anyone can put their finger on it and explain why, but there is definitely something special happening here and it’s an enjoyable place to be right now. In some ways we are surprising ourselves. We’re simply going with the momentum and we are really trying to keep this run going for as long as we can. We’re making the most of the success we are having and it’s a good time for the club. After last season and the trouble we had when we were at the other end of the table, it’s nice to hold our heads up and prove people wrong. Those games are always special, no matter what’s gone on beforehand. We’re all looking forward to it and we’ll be up for that next week, as I am sure they will be too. It would be nice to end the season above Liverpool, but our priority is to be as far up the table as we can. I don’t think we should be looking too far ahead. The priority is to get the three points against them next week, which will be extremely difficult.” (07/12/04) Davey Weir has been named Everton's OPTA Player of The Month for November. Everton only lost to high flying Chelsea in the month, which also seen them play two other tough away games, plus a home win against Fulham. Davey played in them all, and is part of our measly tight defence, who currently are playing out of their skin. Joey Yobo is suffering the consequences of Davey's form, and I think he will be a permanent fixture for some time to come. As usual Davey will be presented with a years supply of Dairy Lea, before Saturday's home game against Bolton. He has, with the other past Everton winners, been entered into the end of season draw for a weekend in Mablethorpe. Quality. (30/11/04) With Scotland manager Vogts departing and a certain Walter Smith the bookies favourite to take charge, people are putting 2 and 2 together, thinking Weir will come back into the Scottish fold after falling out with Vogts. Wrong! Davie says: "I haven't thought about a possible return to the Scotland team. Playing for Everton is great - and it is hard enough staying in this team. International football is so competitive and it takes so much of your energy. I don't think that is the right thing to do." Davie thinks Walter will do well as Scotland manager. It was Smith who bought Weir for £250,000 in 1999 from Hearts. Well done Walter. Davie
on Smith: "His profile and the things he has achieved make
him the ideal candidate." (04/11/04) Davey Weirs recent great form has been highlighted by the fact that he is Everton's OPTA Player of the Month for October. Davey who is keeping Joey Yobo out of the side at present won 77% of tackles in the month. He also had a goal assist to his name, and a passing accuracy of 67%. Dave is now entered into the prize draw of a weekend in the Trossochs, as the season's overall prize. He is also to be presented with a years supply of Kendal Mint Cake prior to the home game against Fulham in a few weeks time, for his monthly achievement. (03/11/04) Davey Weir is relishing the task of his visit to Stamford Bridge this weekend to take on the billionaires that are Chelsea. It is certainly the game of the weekend, as third face second. As Davey suggests this will be a test to see how far Everton have come. Come on you Blue Boys. Davey says: "Chelsea is a great opportunity for us to see if we have improved as much as the table suggests and as much as we hope we have. It is a big game for us and a tough game for us but one we are all excited about. You always want to play and compete against the best. Every game brings its own test and in every game we want to show we deserve to be where we are. But there are not many harder than Chelsea. We got a draw there last season so hopefully we can go one better this time." (02/11/04) Moyesy has given Davey Weir a glimmer of hope in extending his contract at the end of the season. Davey who has been in the side since an injury to Joey Yobo, has been performing superbly in the middle of defence with his partner Alan Stubbs. Davey was told come the end of the season, he would not be offered a new deal, but over the last few days Moyesy has had a change of heart. Maybe a dangled carrot to keep his level of performance up, but if it works, give him one. Now, now, I meant a contract !!!! Moyesy says: "Anything is still possible over Davie's contract. We will see what happens at the end of the season. Davie is an exceptional professional. His form has been great since he got in the team because of Joseph's injury and he is in there on merit at the moment." Davey says: "I didn't expect to be told I would be staying. I'm 35 this year and Everton are not in a position to be offering 35-year-olds new deals. But I'm not really thinking about the contract at the moment. I just have to keep playing well to try and get a new deal and if it happens it happens." (01/11/04) Davey Weir believes half the reason that Everton had such a promising start to this campaign, is the fact that half the first team squad will be out of contract at the end of the season. Players like Big Dunc, Nace, Stubbsy, Stevey Watto, Nige Martyn, Killa and Dave himself are all playing for new contracts. In Davey's case though Moyesy has already told him that he will not be offered a new deal comes the end of the season. Dave also comments on the change of attitude by Moyesy himself, that has also contributed to the change in the teams fortunes. His confrontational way has been pushed aside by a more listening manner. Moyesy though had to refute claims that he was standing in for Trisha, whilst she took a well earned break. Davey says: "The manager has already said that, basically, there won't be another contract for me. Without presenting it in such black and white terms, he said this will probably be my last season and I probably won't be first choice. He wants to get younger players in. I am really playing to be noticed by another club but I have only played four games. I want to play 40. I still think I have a lot to offer. Lots of older players are still playing and I think I have tried to look after myself. I don't know what happened. But I think he suffered because he had not been used to dealing with the pressure. It weighed heavily on everyone. He's tried to be a bit more objective rather than in your face and overly confrontational. So it's working for him." (06/10/04) Everyone is waiting for the wheels to come crashing off, some of us included, but this only spurs Davey Weir and the Everton lads on. I think we are all guilty off waiting for the Everton of old to kick in, but Davey Weir insists that the doubters are all wrong, and Everton are made of sterner stuff this season. Davey says: "Even though we’ve got 16 points from seven games, people are still questioning whether we can stay up there. But the doubters that we’ve had before the season and during the first few games is a side issue as far as I am concerned. We’ve got to try and keep on getting results - and that’s the only way we will answer them. We
have done quite well, not just since I’ve been in the side, but since
the Arsenal game the team have done well at the back. Defending is something
that we always work on during the week and it’s great to see it pay off.
Up until now, we’ve been going about things relatively well and if we
keep winning, the more people we will silence. Experienced defender (that's polite for old) Davey Weir, is trying to keep his team mates feet firmly on the ground, following the Blues third away win out of four at Pompey yesterday. Davey who was a pivotal figure in the Blues seventh placed finish two seasons ago, thinks we are still a bit away from the form that kept us in the top six most of the season. Davey says: "We have a long way to go before it’s on that scale. But we are enjoying it and we are realising what is getting us the results and trying to continue in the same manner. It was very tough, a battle from start to finish, but coming to places like Portsmouth you know it’s always going to be like that. It wasn’t a particularly pretty game, there wasn’t an awful lot of football played but it was a great result from us and to win away from home is a bonus. The table is very tight, but the quicker we can get these wins and results then the quicker we can push on. We are all working hard, everyone is doing their bit and as well as that all the lads are doing that little bit extra to help the others out and that’s always important. Everyone knows winning breeds confidence. You get that little bit of luck and get on a roll, you start to win games and then what follows on from that is that you start expecting to win." (27/09/04) Moyesy has given veteran centre half Davey Weir, the proverbial pat on the back, after his displays of late has kept Joey Yobo, freezing his nuts off on the bench. Moyesy however may give Joey a run out tomorrow, and give Davey's legs a rest, as the Blues go in search of the only domestic trophy to avoid them, which is the Milk, sorry The Coca Cola, no its not that either, I mean the Littlewwods, no anyway the League Cup. Fuck that I'm off for a pint of Carling. Moyesy says: "Having Joseph Yobo on the bench shows that, despite the size of the squad, we have competition for places. We are in a good position because there are no real injuries at the moment. David Weir has come in and done great. He has been a really good centre-half for us in the last three games." (21/09/04) Davey Weir is hoping that the Blues can show the same hard work and commitment that propelled the Blues up the table, two seasons ago. With the Blues lying seventh in the table, something must have changed. City away this week, you all owe us from last season. Davey says: "We can compete with the best. The Manchester United game showed that. Honesty and work-rate goes a long way in the Premiership. If we can continue showing that, coupled with the ability we have, I doubt we’ll have too many problems. Although we’ve had relative success, we realise that we’ve achieved that because of how hard we’ve worked. As soon as we forget that or lose our honesty, we know that we’ll be in trouble." (05/09/04) Club Captain and all round good egg, Davey Weir is reminding everyone that no one is bigger than the club. Everton's fattest supporter Jimmy 'Pie Arse' Fatsack, is contesting these remarks, and has been in touch with his legal people. Davey also comments on the fact, that with no new faces around Goodison till January, it will have a positive effect on the small squad, that Moyesy has to pick from. Davey says: "I can understand why the fans are upset, any fan would be gutted to see one of their favourite players leave. It’s happened in the past, but football moves on. Wayne’s had an opportunity to do what he wants to do, and he’s taken it.
We’ve got to continue to pull together. We’ve got a relatively small squad
and a lot of things have gone against us. We’ve got to react in the right
way and continue to play as we have been doing." Davie is one of the nice chaps in the game and he is well aware, at the age of 34,that this will probably be his last season at Everton, but it won't stop him giving his all and hopefully enjoying himself. Davie says: "I just want to be playing. I missed a lot of last season for various reasons, and my plan is just to get on the pitch and play as many games as I can. Personally, I wasn't glad the season was over. You only get so many games of football and so many seasons so you want to enjoy it and enjoy every minute you get on the pitch. I don't want to wish it away." "I'm 34 years old now, so a contract extension is probably not on the cards for me. I'm just hoping I can play and play well, and if I do play well then maybe there will be something at the end of the season for me. Time will tell. But I'm not just going out to enjoy it as my career is towards the end rather than the beginning. I want to do well, and if I'm doing and the team is doing well, then I'll be enjoying it." "The new season is a fresh start for us and I'm looking forward to it. We had a good season the year before last and then we've had a not so good season so we know we can do better this time around."
