EVERTON: Simonsen, Wynne, Gerrard , Fox, Clarke, Schumacher, Brown, Wilson, Symes, Pascucci, Barry.

BENCH: Moogan B.(Wilson 46), Lynch (Pascucci 58), Turner, Hughes, Boyle.

An extremely young Blues second string, devoid of any first team experience, earned a creditable draw away at Newcastle last night. The Geordies fielded plenty of players with first team experience, including Welsh bad boy Craig Bellamy, Hugo Viana, and Shola Ameobi. The class showed as Everton were on the back foot for most of the game, and as early as the fifth minute Simonsen was called into action, saving well from Bellamy.Simonsen who was cleary man of the match held Newcastle at bay all evening, with fine stops from Chopra, Viana and Orr.In the crowd was one Alan Shearer braving the cold North East weather, and he nearly seen Everton snatch it in the end, when Michael Symes, broke away and laid the ball onto Gavin Lynch whose effort was saved well by Bartlett. Everton finished the game much the stronger side, but I am sure with the team Andy Holden fielded, he would have been the happier of the two managers. (27/01/04)
