Everton:
Lake, Wynne, Hughes,
Gerrard, Fox, Seargeant,
Moogan,
Wilson, Boyle.
Vaughan, McGoldrick. Andy Holden's team played well against an older and more physical team in Southport. The team took a while to get going, but were knocking the ball about leading up to half time and deserved their 2-1 interval lead. Everton started the second half brightly, again passing the ball about sweetly. They had a series of chances to go further ahead, but did not take them. All in all it was a good work out. Players who stood out were McGoldrick, Vaughan, Hughes and Gerrard. Lake: Made some good saves. Was dominant in his box, but was a bit hurried in some of his clearances and put his team mates under pressure. Wynne: Had a sound game. Always willing to support Seargeant on the flank. Hughes: Did well against some lively and experienced players. Mark was good in the air and made some great tackles. Not intimidated by some of the Southport players. Gerrard: Formed a good defensive partnership with Yozzer. Played well and always trying to play the ball out of defence. Missed a tackle for Southport's second goal. He could have been distracted seeing his redshite cousin leaving from the stands. Fox: Danny had a steady game. Did well defensively, but could have joined in a few attacks. Caught in possession. This led to Southport's second goal. Seargeant: Playing out wide right. He put over some great crosses. made the goal for McGoldrick. Christian (Steve's son) was isolated out wide. May need to play in the middle to get more of the ball. Moogan: Had a decent first half, but gave the ball away too many times in the second half. This led to his substitution. Wilson: Busy game. Did well against some experienced players. Boyle: Did little wrong, but didn't make an impact. Vaughan: Had a great game and deserved his goal. Unlucky not have at least another. Was very determined. Worked his socks off. Good in the air and held the ball up well. McGoldrick: The 16 year old trialist played very well. Some great touches. Scored a great header from Seargent's cross. Was not afraid of the physical stuff, and came back for more. Could have scored a couple more goals in the second half, but on this performance well worth taking him on board. Fowler: Andy did ok on the left, but wasn't confident enough to go outside his man. He tended to come back inside. * Ex-Everton reserve player Chris Price was Southport captain. He was having a gab with Everton coach, Gary Abblet about old times. * Southport striker Neil Robinson is the son of former Everton full back, Neil Robinson. |
