Everton's
second string replicated the first team with a 1-0 win away at notloB.
A second minute winner from young Alan Kearney, gave maximum points
to Andy Holden's men. Kearney expertly guided his shot into the Bolton
net, in the first salvo of the match, after judging his run in from
the left hand side to perfection. The move was started by goal keeping
debutante John Ruddy, who set up the goal with a quick thinking throw
out. Ruddy look calm and assured all evening, but in reality his goal
was rarely threatened, as Everton controlled the game. It should have
been two, but Victor Anichebe's tap in was ruled illegal, after the
referee decided that Howarth in the Bolton sticks had been impeded.
The
only down side to the evening, was the loss through injury of Centre
Half Mark 'Yosser' Hughes, who was subbed halfway through the second
period. This meant Everton had a tricky last twenty minutes to endure,
but the youngsters held out well to take all the points. (06/09/05)
Andy
Holden says: Any result is a good result but I was very pleased
with the first-half performance. I thought we totally dominated the
game and on another night we should have come in two or three goals
up. But we didn't and we just didn't start in the second half which
meant they got on the front foot. One or two of the inexperienced boys
made the wrong decisions at the wrong times and it could have been a
different story. But you get that with the youngsters. They should have
killed the game off in the first-half and then they get a bit edgy and
were taking an extra touch when maybe they should have been putting
their foot through the ball and regrouping.
It
was a win and there were some good performances from one or two. Alan
Kearny is a great kid who doesn't get fazed by anything and he does
everything right. When I see him down at the Academy he does everything
to the best of his ability. He is a 100 per cent trainer and he reaps
the rewards when he comes with me and when he plays with Neil Dewsnip
on a Saturday morning. I was delighted for him (John Ruddy) because
he is working extremely hard with Chris Woods at the moment." (06/09/05)
