A
sensational comeback in the last ten minutes gave Andy Holden's youngster's
a share of the spoils in Southport last night. Trailing 2-0 with goals
from Wright-Phillips and Sturridge, Everton looked dead and buried by
the more experienced City side.
For
most of the game Everton had to contend with long range efforts as City
denied them any space. With time running out, Everton pulled one back
when one of the long range efforts found the back of the net. Victor
Anichebe blasted in from distance, to give the Blues a fighting chance.
With minutes left on the clock Bjarni Vidarrsson forced the ball over
the line, after a scramble in the City goal mouth as Everton sensed
they could get something out of the game
Hero
of the night was Dickie Wright, when with the clock ticking down, he
produced a world class double save to deny City the three points that
they thought ten minute earlier they had in the bag.

Coach
Andy Holden says: "I am pleased because at one stage I
didn’t think we had a right to be in the game. As I have said before
on numerous occasions, they are a great bunch of kids to work with and
they have got a never say die attitude and they got back in the game.
Man City had a large share of the possession but there were some good
points, I thought Mark Hughes at the back was excellent and was a colossus
at times and I thought he held us together at times. There were a couple
of important saves at the right time from Richard as well, and I’ve
said before Richard is great amongst these young lads and has a great
attitude. I was pleased for Victor Anichebe as well, he’s been threatening
to do that for a while and I’m pleased he got his goal."
