I'm currently reading a book called Ajax Barcelona Cruyff, It's as close as you can get to an official autobiography of the great Johan Cruyff, as it's the only book to be authorised by the maestro himself. It's an excellent book (so far) in the Foreword it talks about Ajax battering the 'shite 5-1 in Amsterdam, and Cruyff "destroying 'shite defender Yeats and scoring two great goals in front of the K(ra)op" in the second leg of the 1966/7 European Cup.
Then on page 58 it shows that one of the greatest players ever was actually an Everton admirer. In an interview during January 1986 talking about tactics and teams playing two strikers, he slags off the Dutch national coach for suggesting that they should play with two strikers he says: "so you tell them to do something they can't do, something they haven't been taught. A team like Everton has an ideal system for two strikers. Everton has the players for it." It's nice to know we were so well regarded by a master technician and tactician. There are lots of other insights into the higher levels of thought about the game during those days, and it's easy to relate to how good our side was in those days. Cruyff talks about defending space (see the Ratters interviews), the third man i.e. a second player always available for a pass. I can remember the tight triangles that our team would play all over the pitch. we would try to get the ball out of danger areas (with skill), and turn it quickly into attack. He also talks about panicking defences, Sharp, Gray and Reid say no more. I'm only half way through, but I would recommend this book to any footy fans who, like me, admired the man and try to understand the intricate workings of the beautiful game. When I've finished the book, I would lend it to you, but my mate Walter (Smith) has asked for it! Great site lads, I'm always delving in for the latest new and views. Ducky Blue Nose, London.
