The Abbey - Top Toffee Ale'ouse

The Abbey
Walton Lane
(corner of Tetlow St, opposite Stanley Park)

Nominated by:
LeeEFC 22, 'Hiya i drink in the abbey and its a gr8 pub very small but its a class pub which serves the best drink aussie white and cider.
Chris & Kerri Simpson, 'there is only one place to go before a match and that's the abbey pub'

The Abbey is only a cats throw from the ground but you would have to swing it outside because there is not enough room to swing a cat inside. This cosy little boozer is a beaut, ideal for those who wish to have a last pint at 2.45pm and still make it to their seat for kick off.

The Management * * *
Run by Margaret Armstrong, who is the tenant, and her son Frank. They are also assisted by the son of the previous boss Sylvia who was tenant when there was the renowned fire just under 2 years ago (apparently Sylvia is hot stuff). Sylvia's son is Tony, Lynne & Chris made up the other members of Margaret's team.

Atmosphere * * *
Whilst the smell of burning is no longer apparent, the evidence of the fire is in the decor! You need to double up at the bar unless you are good in a tight squeeze and can shout from the back. The place is buzzing with Blues and also a strong contingent of away fans who have tip-toed past the Blue House. There was probably as many people boozing outside as there was inside.
Ale * * * *
The obligatory Stella, Tetley Dark Mild (which Kipper was delighted to see to go with his Manns Brown), Strongbow, Aussy Whites - get in there, Extra cold Guinness, and all your usual breezers & bottles Bud, Becks Smirn Ice etc. pretty good for such a small place. But watch out for the plastic glasses which come out once it gets busy.
Music, TV & Radio * *
SKY TV on a small screen, just the one telly (we enjoyed seeing the Mancs get beat again), no jukey or radio. Margaret has her own selection of music behind the bar for that quiet night local sing along, no garage, house or kerrang here and unfortunately no Z Cars to make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up.
Locals * * *
Frogs from Stanley Park who have survived the journey across the road, Lee, Chris & Kerri.
I need to go back & ask Margaret as at this stage I was severely bladdered & forgot to ask about the local characters!
Special Features * * *
The Town Hall is 2 miles 826 yards from here as marked by the black post outside.
Beer Garden at the rear is like an SAS training course!
'Super Cockles' are on sales but the only bloke we saw with them was The Cock'othe Ale'ouse!
Ghost in the cellar is reputed to be Gemma the dog who died in the fire on NY day, the cat will not go in the cellar. A second ghost 'Old Alfie' (Jimmy's 'arl fella) who died whilst changing a light bulb in The Abbey is more friendly.

Doubles bar/Happy hour all day everyday! (except matchdays)!!
